The scorpion rules / Erin Bow.

Bow, Erin, (author.).

Summary:

In the future, the UN has brought back an ancient way to keep the peace. The children of world leaders are held hostage--if a war begins, they pay with their lives. Greta is the Crown Princess of the Panpolar Confederacy, a superpower formed of modern-day Canada. She is also a Child of Peace, a hostage held by the de facto ruler of the world, the great Artificial Intelligence, Talis. The hostages are Talis's strategy to keep the peace: if her country enters a war, Greta dies. The system has worked for centuries. Parents don't want to see their children murdered. Greta will be free if she can make it to her eighteenth birthday. Until then she is prepared to die with dignity, if necessary. But everything changes when Elian arrives at the pretecture. He's a hostage from a new American alliance, and he defies the machines that control every part of their lives--and is severely punished for it. Greta is furious that Elian has disrupted their quiet, structured world. But slowly, his rebellion opens her eyes to the brutality of the rules they live under, and to the subtle resistance of her companions. And Greta discovers her own quiet power. Then Elian's country declares war on Greta's and invades the prefecture, taking the hostages hostage. Now the great Talis is furious, and coming himself to mete out punishment. Which surely means that Greta and Elian will be killed...unless Greta can think of a way to save them.

The children of world leaders are held hostage and killed when nations declare war in this thoughtful science-fiction novel, set 400 years in the future. Peace is maintained by a system developed by artificial intelligence. Maby's narration is well paced, building suspense in sections of conflict and approaching scenes of everyday activities more leisurely. Her voice offers distinctions between characters and highlights their personalities, particularly the dark humor of Talis, the AI ruler. Greta, the protagonist, is also well voiced and portrayed as equally dutiful and naive. Maby's precise diction emphasizes Greta's pragmatic and analytic nature as well as her desire for control. Scenes of levity balance sections of political intrigue, and romantic subplots are presented tenderly but without overshadowing the action of a rebellion and the larger philosophical questions raised by the question of how best to prevent war in an era of increasing competition for natural resources. Gr 9 Up—Four centuries in the future, the UN's leading artificial intelligence has put an end to large-scale wars by requiring all world leaders to surrender one of their children as a hostage to peace. The children live in isolated preceptures and are educated to be future heads of state, all the while knowing that if their countries go to war, their lives are forfeit. Greta Stuart, the crown princess of the Pan Polar Confederation in what was once eastern Canada, has lived at the precepture in Saskatchewan for most of her life and accepts her position without question until the arrival of Elian Palnik from the newly formed Cumberland Alliance (located in what was once parts of Appalachia and Midwestern United States). Elian defies the rules of the Precepture, upsetting the carefully maintained order, and his presence opens Greta's eyes and leads her to challenge the reality she's always accepted. Madeleine Maby narrates this gripping, original, and superbly written story. She captures Greta's precise way of speaking while also navigating the various accents of a large cast of characters, human and AI, from different corners of the world. At her best with Greta, Maby allows the princess's measured tones to slip when emotion demands it and conveys the strength of the multifaceted heroine. VERDICT Full of twists, the story races to a surprising conclusion, and listeners will be clamoring for a follow-up to this thoroughly engaging and thought-provoking novel. McElderry book.]—Amanda Raklovits, Champaign Public Library, IL
