Seventeen-year-old Evie and a man who instructs her to call him "Uncle" have fled Australia to a remote village in New Zealand to avoid capture. Something terrible has happened that a disturbed Evie can't remember. The man claims to be trying to help her reclaim her memory, but why does he routinely feed her pills, lock her in her room, and spend so much time in a shed on the property of the dilapidated house where they seek shelter? Such unanswered questions drive the narrative of this very dark novel of psychological suspense, which moves backward and forward in time between the past, which provides clues as to what has happened, and a sinister present that raises more questions than it answers. Why are the villagers so universally antagonistic, for one example? The mood tends to be one noteâunrelievedly ominousâand the action is fairly predictable, aside from one big surprise. Nevertheless, suspense fans will find this first novel a satisfying if occasionally frustrating read. Copyright 2019 Booklist Reviews. - Kirkus Reviews : Kirkus Reviews 2018 December #2
A 17-year-old girl struggles to piece together the truth about a violent incident she can barely recall. When Kate shows up in rural New Zealand with a man who tells people he's her uncle Jim, she has only the vaguest notion of the danger she's in. Jim has brought her from Melbourne to a seaside town to avoid the police and the social uproar from something she's supposedly done. With a new look and a new nameâJim calls her EvieâKate tries to recall the evening that changed her life. Jim asks her questions about what she can remember, but he won't allow her to go online, he locks her in her room at night, and he seems to have alerted all the locals that she's mentally unbalanced and not to be trusted. But as Jim grows more paranoid, and Kate more desperate to get back home to Melbourne and face the truth, she must decide whether or not Jim is trying to protect her or drive her to the brink. This debut novel by Pomare sets him up as a writer to watch. There are the kind of plot wobbles that often attend first novelsâit may especially frustrate some readers that Pomare uses the cover of Kate's trauma-induced amnesia to withhold vital information that has nothing to do with Kate's memory and everything to do with the author wanting to force a twist. But Pomare's writing is so crisp and his characterizations so spot-on that these tricks are easy to forgive. Readers looking for a page-turner will be happy, but so, too, will those looking for a work with deeper resonances, in this case about gaslighting and the ruthless world of teenagers. Read this one with the lights on, and keep Pomare on your radar. Copyright Kirkus 2018 Kirkus/BPI Communications. All rights reserved. - Library Journal Reviews : LJ Reviews 2018 October #2

[DEBUT] Seventeen-year-old Kate Bennet finds herself in a remote cabin in New Zealand with a man named Jim. Kate's memory is foggy, and she struggles to remember what has happened and how she ended up there. Jim says that he is protecting her and trying to help her remember that awful nightâthe reason they are in hiding. He tells her she should tell the locals to call her Evie and that Jim is her uncle. He adds that she did something really bad back in Melbourne, but is Jim telling the truth and protecting her, or is it all a lie? The story alternates between chapters of before and after Kate is at the cabin. Pomare skillfully leads readers along, slowly revealing parts of the puzzling mystery. The "before" sections present different ideas as to what may be happening. Absorbing, engrossing, and intriguing are just a few descriptors for this book. Pomare keeps readers on the edge of their seats right up to the surprising conclusion. VERDICT With a story line that hooks readers immediately and twists and turns galore, this impressive debut is highly recommended for fans of Gillian Flynn and those who enjoy well-written psychological suspense tales. A bad, bad thing has happened to 17-year-old Kate Bennet, the narrator of Australian author Pomare's outstanding debut, with even worse looming. Feisty Kate, who's from Melbourne, is trying to flee from a controlling older man she calls Jim, who is keeping her a virtual prisoner in a rural New Zealand hideout, ostensibly for her own goodâwhich is also why he claims he's shaving her head as a disguise and insisting she go by the new name of Evie. It's clear the pair's on the run, but from whom? And why? As Kate starts to spin her story, shifting between before she fell into Jim's clutches and afterward, she tries to piece together what happened that traumatic night and figure out the true nature of Jim's gameâand how she can finally escape. Although Pomare cheats a little toward the end, introducing two new voices to reveal what Kate can't or won't, the final pages stun with their gallows-drop plot surprises. Almost nothing will turn out as it initially appears in this devastating novel of psychological suspense.
