Summary: Virginia Tregan returns impoverished to her ancestral Louisiana after eleven years in Paris. With her father dead and the family plantation sold, her only hope is to become the mistress of the Marquis Damvilliers, owner of the magnificient plantation Bagatelle. Virginia's spirits are dashed when she's met at the boat by the marquis' overseer, Clarence. However, she is immediately attracted by the handsome and charismatic Clarence, who is also mysteriously remote.
