Raven and the sun box Cover Image Picture Picture

Raven and the sun box

Heron, Dean (artist).

Summary: "This is the Raven moments before he releases the sun. For a long time Raven perched high above a village in complete darkness. He had witnessed a Chief admiring a glowing object that he would bring out of a Bentwood Box. Raven came up with an ingenious plan to take it for himself. The Chief's daughter would come down to the river's edge to collect water every morning to take it back to their longhouse. Raven transformed himself into a pine needle floating down stream which was scooped up and inadvertently drunk by the daughter. She soon became pregnant. Raven was born in human form as a little baby boy. The Chief was so taken by the little boy that as he grew older he would let the boy, Raven, play with the glowing object from the Bentwood Box. As soon as Raven had grown strong enough to pick up the sun he would then transform himself into natural form and fly away with it. This painting depicts the process of that moment of transformation. Here is the Raven in both human and Raven form. His top portion already as the raven we see him today, and the rest of him still partially as a human." -- from artist website.
